After Formula 1’s annual summer break, racing resumes this weekend in Belgium at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. This is always an eagerly anticipated venue on the racing calendar and will no doubt provide some fantastic racing action. Belgium is also a fantastic tourist destination, just a short ferry, Eurostar or plane flight away from the UK.

We’ve teamed up with Ted Kravitz of Sky Sports F1® again for his Belgian Smart Travel Notebook, Ted gives us his smart tips for traveling to Belgium and the area around the Spa circuit.

Check out the video above for Ted’s top tips on what to see and do in Francochamps, plus how to get to the circuit.

Francochamps itself is only a small town but it is full of charm with plenty of cafes and restaurants to keep you entertained.

The closest city to Francochamps is Liège, a 40 minute drive away. Liège has an excellent eating scene and very friendly locals that happily welcome visitors to the city.

Belgium’s capital, Brussels, is only a 2 hours drive from Francochamps and provides the closest airport to fly into if you’re heading to the circuit. Brussels is a very multicultural city that plays host to a mixture of modern and medieval architecture. No trip to Brussels is complete without a trip to Grand Place, enjoy waffles or a local Belgian beer at one of the square’s cafes and marvel at the focal point, the 15th-century city hall.

Alternatively, if you’re not a fan of the adrenaline fuelled Formula 1, head to the relaxing medieval town of Bruges in the north of Belgium. Take the steep 366-step climb to the top of the Belfort of Bruges for fantastic views of the city, enjoy a boat tour along the canal to learn about the city’s history and take a brewery tour to sample some of the country’s finest beers.
